Cinco de Mayo!!

Monday, May 5th, 2008 | Posted in Uncategorized

It’s another one of my favourite days today! Many years ago, I just started celebrating this day just so I could go around screaming “Happy CINCO de MAYO!” I don’t go all out, buying decorations or anything like that. It’s just a day that I like to recognize. I have no Mexican or French ancestry, that I know of, I just like having a special day to look forward to. My mom even bought me a Cinco de Mayo t-shirt a few years ago and I wear it (and will continue to wear it) every year. I made sure that the RSVP date for my wedding fell on this date since I couldn’t actually have my wedding day on the 5th of May. Last year, national scrapbooking day fell on the 5th. It was a pretty good day!

I think everyone should be able to pick any day that they want and just celebrate. I pick today. What a great time of year to welcome in Spring and go around screaming in limited Spanish. Now, I turn the rest of the month over to the Queen of May: my mother.

Happy Cinco de Mayo everybody!!!!

It’s that time of year again…

(Inter) National Scrapbooking Day! I don’t know anyone who waits for this day as much as I do. Well, there are many on the Scrapbooking forums that I frequent, but that’s about it. In this apartment, it’s quite a big deal. Erik knows to give me space for the day which isn’t difficult since he can always find things to occupy his time when I’m crafting (see his posts to see his newest obsessions).

Today was the first time that I took part in one of the challenges for the day. Last year, I followed along with all the challenges and freebies on two peas but never tried any of them. I usually just do my own thing. This year, I decided to stick with the SISTV crew and try some out. The most interesting challenge that I found this morning was by Lucy, the über talented scrapping diva from whom I have taken a couple of classes.

Her challenge had the following guidelines:
1- one book page (I used it in the clouds)
2- a digital brush (the birds were a freebie for the project)
3- paper balls made out of tissue paper paper (I used them for the leaves on the tree)
4- left over embellishments as a frame for the picture (I used little scraps of ribbon)
5- white cardstock (no pattern paper allowed!)

Here is my interpretation:

I used a quote from Henry Van Dyke on the birds: “Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best.” I found it while looking for a quote about birds and it really jumped out at me. It made me think of my students and how it’s also the time of year that I have to say goodbye to them. The best part about being a teacher is getting to meet so many unique individuals and hopefully being able to help them along the way.

Now I have to go back to the forums to see if there are any free goodies I’ve missed. I’m already excited about next year!
